Kulik's Gem Lifts 56ers Over Meyersdale
June 13, 2007
MEYERSDALE - Chad Kulik went the distance on the mound as the Richland/Windber 56ers edged Meyersdale 6-5, Wednesday night. One day after being shutout and mercy-ruled by Westmont, Kulik gave the 56ers a much needed win by working all seven innings, striking out 10 and allowing only 6 hits. Pitching in a steady rain, Kulik was able to pitch around 11 walks. Chad Miller hit a two-run single in a three run third inning that gave the 56ers a 6-0 lead. Meyersdale made a late charge, including scoring one run in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull within 6-5. But Kulik got a bases loaded strikeout to end the game as Richland/Windber improved to 5-4 (5-7 overall). 56ers Compete in St. Vincent Tournament
June 2-3, 2007
LATROBE, PA - The Richland-Windber 56ers competed in the 1st Annual St. Vincent College American Legion Tournament over the weekend. On Saturday, the 56ers dropped a 10-0 contest to Latrobe at Legion-Keener Park, and then dropped an 11-1 game to Derry at St. Vincent College. On Sunday, the 56ers got their offense going against Westmoreland County squad Irwin, but fell once again, 19-5. Despite losing all three games, the 56ers gained valuable tournament experience that will help the 2007 squad as they play a competitive Cambria County league schedule. (Pictured at left, Chad Kulik delivers a pitch in the tournament's opening game.) Complete box scores, with season statistics, are available on the stats link at the top of the page. The Richland-Windber 56ers fell short of their championship dreams, taking a fourth place finish after sweeping Nanty Glo, and then falling to St. Michael two games to none in the championship semi-finals. However, the 56ers were the recipients of the 2006 Cambria County American Legion Umpires Association Team Sportsmanship Award. Manager Jason Kaminsky and Coach Paul Leonard accepted the award from the umpires at the umpires' July meeting. The award is bestowed on one team each season that demonstrates the sportsmanship and values promoted by American Legion Baseball.
