56ers' Capture Post-Season Hardware
The Richland-Windber 56ers fell short of their championship dreams, taking a fourth place finish after sweeping Nanty Glo, and then falling to St. Michael two games to none in the championship semi-finals. However, the 56ers were the recipients of the 2006 Cambria County American Legion Umpires Association Team Sportsmanship Award. Manager Jason Kaminsky and Coach Paul Leonard accepted the award from the umpires at the umpires' July meeting. The award is bestowed on one team each season that demonstrates the sportsmanship and values promoted by American Legion Baseball.
56ers' Ousted By St. Michael
July 15-16, 2006
A trio of Saints drove in three runs apiece as St. Michael topped Richland/Windber 14-6 to sweep the best-of-3 playoff series at Highland Park on Sunday.
Broc Jennings, Josh Hershberger and Tony Mickus had three RBIs for St. Michael, while Travis Rearick chased in two runs.
Ross Carpenter and Hershberger led St. Michael with four hits apiece. Teammates Jeff Rolla (three hits), Rearick (two) and Mickus (two) also turned in multiple-hit performances for the Saints.
The 56ers, who close the season at 14-12, received two hits apiece from Andy Rubal, Brad Dale and Jake Lehman. Lehman also had two RBIs while Craig Montag scored twice.
St. Michael (22-3) will take on Meyersdale, a 2-1 series winner over Somerset in the championship series. The best-of-3 title series begins July 18th.

Richland-Windber Sweeps Nanty Glo

Josh Szelong tripled and doubled, and Nick Samko doubled and drove in htree runs as the 56ers swept Nanty Glo in their Cambria Legion Quarterfinal Playoff series, 10-3, Friday night. Brad Dale gave the 56ers (14-10) a solid outing on the mound, limiting Nanty Glo to nine hits and three runs over eight innings. Dale also had two hits at the plate as part of the 56ers' 15-hit attack. Richland-Windber now moves on to face Central Division rival St. Michael in the semifinals for a berth in the Cambria Legion Championship. 56ers Take 1-0 Lead: Kulik, Leonard Shine In The Clutch

Ben Leonard's two-out two-run single in the fifth inning snapped a 8-8 tie and lifted the Richland-Windber 56ers (13-10) to a come from behind win in second-round Cambria Legion playoff action, Thursday. Chad Kulik picked up the win in relief allowing four hits, fanning six, while allowing just one unearned run over six innings. Eric "Snoop" Jansure allowed two hits and 0 runs in four innings of relief for Nanty Glo.
Nick Samko, CJ Veriostick, Andy Rubal, Sam Eash, Josh Szelong, and Brad Dale all had two hits as part of the 56ers' 15 hit attack. Brad Weimer had three hits for Nanty Glo (13-10) and Adam Crookshank and Brad Mosley each had two hits.
Richland-Windber leads the best-of-three series 1-0. Game two will be played at Highland Park Friday afternoon with an early start time of 4:00 pm.

56ers Rally To Defeat Lilly; Clinch Sixth Spot in Playoffs

The Richland/Windber 56ers rallied from an 8-5 deficit to defeat Lilly/Loretto on the road, Monday night. The win clinched sixth place in the Cambria County Legion League playoff seedings, giving the 56ers (12-10) an off day before starting a best-of-three series with #3 Nanty Glo (13-9) on Wednesday. Trailing, 8-5 RW rallied for four runs in the sixth inning, and took the lead on a two-out two-run single by Josh Szelong. Szelong finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and four RBI. Szelong also notched the win, working three scoreless innings, fanning four, while allowing just one hit. Rolla, Saints Defeat RW

The Richland/Windber 56ers saw their three game winning streak snapped as they dropped an 8-3 contest to division leading St. Michael (11-2) Wednesday night at Highland Park. The 56ers (8-6) fell behind 4-0 before their bats came alive against starter Dave Mehall in the bottom of the fourth inning. The 56ers narrowed the gap to 5-3 after six innings as Ben Leonard knocked in two runs, and Craig Montag hit a sacrifice fly. However the rally fell short as Jeff ROlla broke the game open for St. Michael with a two run home run in the top of the seventh. Rolla finished the night with six RBI for St. Michael. The 56ers will next play on Friday June 30th at at Claysburg, and then travel to St. Michael on Saturday, and go to Lilly for a doubleheader on Sunday July 2nd.
'Sixers Win Third In A Row

The 56ers won their third in a row, Monday night as they edged Portage 8-7. Tied at 7-7, the 56ers scored the game-winner in the top of the seventh inning, as Doug Zubal beat out a would-be double play groundball to score Ben Leonard. The 56ers took a 2-0 lead in the first on a single by Ben Leonard, and a sacrifice fly by Sam Eash. Portage scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning as wet conditons made throwing the ball an adventure. Trailing 6-2 in the fifth, the 56ers capitalized on a similar situation when CJ Verostick hit a single with the bases loaded that scored two runs. A throwing error allowed Andy Rubal to score from first on the play, and Verostick, who trailed Rubal around the bases scored when the ball got away from Portage's catcher, tying the game at 6-6. Richland/Windber also won back to back games from Conemaugh and Ebensburg last week, after dropping two in a row to Somerset and St. Michael last weekend. Meyersdale Wins Close One

The 56ers dropped another non-divisional matchup, Wednesday 5-4 to Meyersdale. Just as was the case against Nanty Glo, the 56ers wasted a fine pitching performance from Chad Kulick. Kulick allowed just five hits and one earned run, but the 56ers' defense combined to allow four unearned runs. Meanwhile, the offense got back on track after Monday's loss at Westmont, by banging out 12 hits and notching four earned runs. CJ Verostick led the way batting 3-for-4, while Nick Samko, Josh Szelong, and Doug Zubal banged out two hits each.

56ers Sweep Divisional DH, Drop Games Outside Division

The 56ers sandwiched a pair of non-divisional losses around a divisional sweep of a doubleheader against Portage. The 56ers dropped a 5-4 contest at Nanty Glo on Friday, then swept two games from Portage on Sunday. Westmont received a fine pitching performance from Eric Blue to down the 'Sixers 6-2, Monday evening.

RW Takes Easy Win

The Richland-Windber 56ers upped their record to 2-0 with a 7-0 forfeit win over Patton, Wednesday night. Patton failed to field a lineup with enough players, which resulted in the forfeit. The 56ers next take on Nanty Glo on Friday June 9th at Nanty Glo at 6:00pm.
Verostick, Rubal Lead 56ers Past Spangler

The Richland-Windber 56ers opened their 2006 season with a 9-3 road win at Spangler, Monday evening. The 56ers were led at the plate by Andy Rubal and CJ Verostick who each rapped out a pair of hits. Verostick also drove in a pair with a two-run single in the fourth inning, while Verostick, Nick Samko, and Rubal each scored a pair of runs. Verostick also picked up the pitching victory, scattering four hits while striking out five hitters. 56ers Rained Out
May 31, 2006
The Richland-Windber 56ers were rained out in an attempt to open their season on the road at the Stoystown Stars at Shade High School Field. The game will be made up tenatively on June 4th at 1:00pm at Shade High School. The 56ers also had their first two dates postponed. On May 28th, the 56ers game at Lilly/Loretto was cancelled due to Richland High School's District 6AA playoff game at Bald Eagle Area High School. The May 28th home game with Bedford was cancelled due to Bedford's participation in the District 5AA playoffs. Neither game has been rescheduled as of this date. The June 5th game at Spangler has been rescheduled for June 6th at Spangler, and the June 2nd home game with Somerset has been rescheduled for June 17th at noon due to Somerset High School graduation.
